Q: Introduction of yourself.
I am Miss Chan, 63 years old, an ex-school teacher and I retired at the age of 60. Starting this business was actually by chance. Early of this year (2017) in February, I bumped into a Korean guy in his first outlet. He was planning to open another outlet and was looking for a Malaysian partner. He asked me whether I have friends who were interested then. Long ago, I’ve always dreamt of opening my own café because I’d always love café hopping. Thinking to myself, if the investment is within my mean, why not? That’s how I started this business.
Q: Why is it named ‘Kory’?
Kory in Korean actually means Korean. My partner is 100% Korean. The bakery is actually his concept, a central kitchen for baking buns and bread. All the pastries are Korean-inspired except for some of them which is localised like butter cake. As Koreans are very health conscious, they take very little sugar, salt and MSG, they’d go more for organic food. It may taste very flat and tasteless to some. That’s why when you venture into an F&B business in Malaysia, you will need to make some modifications. Some of the signatures such as the breads and cream cheese buns are without yeast and preservatives. He emphasizes a lot on the quality of the flour, thus he uses imported flour from Singapore.
Q: I thought Kory focuses on Bingsu, did not know that Kory provides bakeries as well.
I’m trying to focus more variety of food instead of just one. If I were to do this, I would not be able to cover the rental. There are hot milk, cold drinks, dessert such as Bingsu, cake, coffee and many more. I try to cover four meals of the day like breakfast, lunch, teatime, and dinner. I myself do a lot of food tasting. On and off I will check on the food before delivering to customers.
Q: What is the concept of Kory?
Kory believes in offering healthy and organic food to the consumers. Even our drink and Bingsu are made with organic fresh fruit. Sometimes, imported fruits are hard to come by so we substitute it with frozen fruits, but we try to offer foods that are as organic as possible without any preservative.
Q: What is the philosophy when comes to making food?
My main concern is to give customer good quality and presentation at reasonable price. To me, I’m not aiming big profit from there, as long as I can break even and earn a little bit from the investment, I’m contented as I’m starting this purely out of passion.
Q: The most enjoyable while doing this business
When customer leaves with a satisfactory smile and comes back for more later.
