Jess, 30 years old. A person of business background with burning passion towards pastry experience in
Melbourne, Australia. She used to love the cake and pastries, but later on, her love for soft serve grew.

Q: Why Hail’s Soft Serve?
Hail’s, it means hailstorm like ice chunks falling from the sky. Here in Hail’s, it’s like ice cream failing out from the ice cream machine.

I took up a Patisserie course and as I was introduced to the making of soft serve, the texture of soft serve just caught my attention and my interest grew more from there. So, I thought of starting a café with soft serve as the main serving using the techniques of pastry. This is also the reason why in Hail’s, we are able to offer many different flavors that are rare in the market. The flavors include international and local flavors. Most of the flavors are inspired from my travels.

Q: What’s so different about Hail’s Soft Serve?
Hail’s Soft Serve always has strong passion for constant innovation and customization. With the pastry background, every single topping available in the café are all handmade. within a year, we managed to come out with 30 different flavors and the flavors changes every month and some flavors would rotate when there is high demand.

The café initially started off with international flavors, then slowly we added the local flavors as we feel that Malaysian has a strong sense of belonging. “Malaysia will always be our roots” and because it’s our roots, we would tend to miss the taste of the place. In Hail’s Soft Serve, we created these flavors with a twist, and as people taste it, they are able to feel connected and everyone gets excited about it. These flavors are roasted Teh Tarik and Gula Melaka.

Q: Philosophy in running the business
I always feel that one must always be transparent with your ingredients because you need good ingredients for your regulars to come back. A sudden hype is useless, but the continuous and consistency in using good ingredients are the reasons why regulars come back.

Q: Enjoyable Moment
My most enjoyable moment would probably be having the freedom to create, to bring ideas and
inspiration to life and when people like your products and innovation, they walk out with a smile. That’s
the most enjoyable moment.
