Q: Can you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Shahril, people just call me Bob, because before this I was fat (Badan Orang Besar).

Q: Introduction of your cafe.

I like music, and there is a partner of mine who enjoys music and live band, but to us, we think the live bands nowadays are just… very mediocre. We are not in the live era now, the live singing is not as many as before. So we decided to create a platform for live singing and thus we founded this cafe in December last year (2016). Basically this cafe is about music and food.

We are trying to impart the knowledge of music legends to the customers. That is why we are putting the artists’ quotes on the table, so that the customers can read them when they’re dining or waiting for the food.

Q: The story behind the name “The Anechoic”?

Anechoic means free from echo. There is a real chamber known as Anechoic Chamber which is built to test sound. As the chamber is designed to absorb the reflections of sounds, you can get the purest and clearest voice free from noises from the chamber. We are trying to apply that idea here, so you can talk freely without any echo while enjoying the crystal clear music at the background.

Q: Philosophy of Cooking.

We employ a home cooked style of cooking. At Anechoic, we provide Asian-Western fusion food and combine local elements into the Western food to localize them.

Q: I can see there are a couple of musical instruments around, and from your Instagram, there are live band sessions in your cafe. Is this session a regular activity of your cafe?

Yes, we have live band session on every Saturday, around 8pm – 9pm, depending on the timing we schedule with the band. We are trying to make this session twice a week, to share more music and people can chill and dine in The Anechoic. We focus more on acoustic music because this creates a good and calming ambience.

Q: Best dishes of the cafe?

The best for me is “Butter Late Than Chicken”, it is a dish of Butter Chicken with rice. We got this name from the phrase “Better Late than Never”.

Q: Memorable moments or how this cafe change you?

When I started running this cafe, there is a lot of positive vibes coming from the staffs and the customers. Before I started this business, I was a very passive person, but when I got into this business, I socialize more. When we open a cafe, we are not afraid, we just do it.
